Lipopolysaccharide core glycosylation in Rhizobium leguminosarum. An unusual mannosyl transferase resembling the heptosyl transferase I of Escherichia coli.

The lipopolysaccharide structure of the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum differs from that of Escherichia coli in several ways, one of which is the sugar composition of the core. The E. coli inner core consists of 3-deoxy-D-manno-octulosonic acid (Kdo) and L-glycero-D-manno-heptose (heptose), while the inner core of R. leguminosarum contains 2-keto-3-deoxy-D-manno-octulosonic a...

Rhizobium leguminosarum CFN42 lipopolysaccharide antigenic changes induced by environmental conditions.

Four monoclonal antibodies were raised against the lipopolysaccharide of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli CFN42 grown in tryptone and yeast extract. Two of these antibodies reacted relatively weakly with the lipopolysaccharide of bacteroids of this strain isolated from bean nodules. Growth ex planta of strain CFN42 at low pH, high temperature, low phosphate, or low oxygen concentration also...

Rhizobium gone native: unexpected plasmid stability of indigenous Rhizobium leguminosarum.

Lateral transfer of bacterial plasmids is thought to play an important role in microbial evolution and population dynamics. However, this assumption is based primarily on investigations of medically or agriculturally important bacterial species. To explore the role of lateral transfer in the evolution of bacterial systems not under intensive, human-mediated selection, we examined the associatio...

A Rhizobium leguminosarum AcpXL mutant produces lipopolysaccharide lacking 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acid.

The structure of the lipid A from Rhizobium etli and Rhizobium leguminosarum lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) lacks phosphate and contains a galacturonosyl residue at its 4' position, an acylated 2-aminogluconate in place of the proximal glucosamine, and a very long chain omega-1 hydroxy fatty acid, 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acid (27OHC28:0). The 27OHC28:0 moiety is common in lipid A's among members of ...

Congo Red Absorption by Rhizobium leguminosarum.

Congo red absorption is generally considered a contraindication of Rhizobium. However, R. leguminosarum takes up the dye on yeast extract-mannitol agar. The uptake of congo red varies among strains of R. leguminosarum, as shown elsewhere with strains of R. trifolii and R. meliloti. Congo red absorption does not distinguish rhizobia from other bacteria, but may be useful as a strain marker.
